I recently watched a movie called Awake starring Hayden Christiansen, Jessica Alba and Terrence Howard. It is a story about one man who undergoes a heart transplant and is awake for it all – he can feel every incision, hear every sound. Of course, he was given anesthesia but it did not put him completly under…just enough to where he was paralyzed and could not move or scream. Very dramatic I know…but now, just a few days later, I learn I will be going through a surgery of my own on Thursday (although it is a minor, outpatient surgery – not anywhere close to what Hayden’s character had to go through). Nonetheless, it is a surgery where I will be put under local anesthetic and the procedure can last up to 45 minutes. I will spare everyone the details but I have to say I’m a little more than nervous about it…and watching this movie certainly has not helped! Why do I watch movies like this?? Earlier I was completely paranoid – will I end up being one of 30,000 a year who is awake for it all?
I am going to try to remain positive though and think happy thoughts. It could very well end up being worth the 45 minutes and minor discomfort that follows.
