A Spark Of Creativity

April 30, 2008

I picked up a book recently entitled “The Making of A Story: A Norton Guide To Creative Writing” by Alice LaPlante.  In it, she discusses how one of the keys to “good writing” is to keep the reader interested by creating writing that is surprising yet convincing.   No one wants to keep reading a book that is predictable or inconceivable.

Another tidbit was to resist the urge to paraphrase.  Really use descriptive words to help the reader visualize, hear, smell, and feel as though they are right along side of the character.  As a writer, we need to tell the whole story and not just provide a summary of what happened.

Finally, she talks about how to begin to write, we need to notice  our surroundings.  Practice writing what you see everyday.  Even seemingly simple settings or situations.  Take a walk in the park and notice the people walking their dogs.  Describe what they are wearing.  What stands out?  What makes them unique or interesting?  What are your overall impressions?  What other things are going on around you?

The goal for this extended weekend (yes, I am off of work for three days!) is to take a walk through the neighborhood, pay attention to the surroundings and write a post about it.

Meet My Muse

April 6, 2008

In the book “Writing from the Heart: Tapping Into the Power of Your Inner Voice” by Nancy Slonim Aronie, she discusses how in order to begin writing, you must first find your muse.  Become friends with your muse.  Invite her in.  Make her feel at home and hopefully, she will decide to visit.  And visit often.

I decided what better way to schmooze my muse was to dedicate a blog in her honor.  The Greek muse Calliope, or “beautiful voice” is also known as the Muse of Epic Poetry and Eloquence.  The eldest and wisest of the muses in mythology, she is often seen holding a writing tablet in hand.   Best known as Homer’s muse, she is said to be responsible for the Iliad and The Odyssey.

Welcome, Calliope.  Pull up a chair, sip some hot tea, and stay as long as you like.

My Right To Write

March 27, 2008

My best friend Kristy and I have been talking for some time now about writing a book.  Finally, we have decided to put our ideas to pen and paper.  The purpose of this blog is twofold:  to help me develop my writing skills and help me collect as much information as possible on how to become a good writer.  Sortof like my one-stop-shop for useful information.  Along my own writing journey, if someone else learns something new too – well, that is just the icing on the cake.

Topics on this blog will change like the weather.  There are no parameters, no presumptions.

The goal is simply to write.  And, with time, write well.
